General Information

In this section:

Introduction

The State Hospital recognises the importance of effectively engaging with patients, their families and carers. In line with the NHSScotland Healthcare Quality Strategy, the views and needs of patient visitors and carers are seen as pivotal to the delivery of person-centred services.

These views can be shared by way of compliments, comments, concerns and complaints either verbally in person or over the phone, via email, through onsite suggestion boxes, by post, or through the annual Visit Experience Questionnaire. Additionally patient visitors / carers are welcome to observe Board meetings.

It is on the left as you enter and is open daily. There are refreshment vending machines, tea and coffee making facilities, and personal lockers for items that are not being taken into the Hospital.

There is also a dedicated Family Centre where the Carers’ Support Group Photo: Carers' Reception Areameets, and where family visits involving children take place.

Both of these areas include WCs with a dedicated baby changing area, a private meeting room, and tea and coffee making facilities. From the Family Centre there is also access to an outdoor garden area.

Carer Engagement

The Involvement and Equality Service (IES) is responsible for supporting carers to be meaningfully involved in helping us to develop our services.

Photo: Family Centre buildingEffective communication therefore continues to be a key priority. The Carer Engagement Facilitator ensures that carers are kept well informed through regular newsletters, dedicated information leaflets and other relevant materials. Individual meetings with carers and patient visitors can be arranged, and there is also the opportunity to join the Carers' Support Group.

Carers are represented through a number of forums including the IES Steering Group, consultation groups and focus groups. The Carers’ Support Group is central to supporting and facilitating active consultation and engagement.

Carers are involved in supporting individual patients through the Care Programme Approach (CPA) process which applies to all State Hospital patients throughout their care pathway.
