Patients’ Learning Centre Volunteer
About this Role
To support the provision of learning activities. This department provides a wide range of activities for patients including core skills qualifications in Numeracy, Communication and Information Communication Technology (ICT), International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL), and the Open University (OU). The volunteer will work with the team of staff providing this activity for patients who attend the Patients’ Learning Centre (PLC).
Key Tasks
- Help prepare materials and resources needed for learning activities, including textbooks, worksheets, and learning aids.
- Ensure that the learning environment is organised and conducive to effective learning.
- Assist in facilitating learning sessions by providing individualised support to patients based on their needs and skill levels.
- Offer guidance and encouragement to patients as they engage in learning activities and exercises.
Skills and Experience Required
- Clear and effective communication skills to interact with patients and staff members.
- Ability to convey complex concepts in a simplified manner for patients with varying levels of understanding.
- Empathetic approach towards patients, understanding their individual learning needs and challenges.
- Patience and understanding to support patients as they progress through learning activities at their own pace.

Time Requirements
One three hour session per week for a minimum of 12 months.
Potential volunteers will be risk assessed in accordance with volunteering guidance. All potential volunteers must complete the NHS Recruitment process, which includes appropriate clearance from Disclosure Scotland, and satisfactory health & reference checks.
