Volunteer Driver
About this Role
Due to the location of the Hospital, many of our carers find it difficult to visit when using public transport. Volunteer drivers would be required to transport State Hospital approved carers by their own vehicle from local bus / train stations to the Hospital and return.
Key Tasks
- Being prompt and on time for all pick-ups and drop offs.
- Being courteous, friendly and professional at all times.
- Contacting us if you have any questions or concerns.
- Letting us know, as soon as possible, if you can no longer undertake a journey.
- Feeding back any safeguarding concerns to us as soon as possible.
- Completing accurate expense claims, submitted on a regular basis.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding patient / carer information.
- Regular vehicle maintenance to ensure safety of clients.
- Provide annual updates on vehicle insurance and MOT.
- Provide up-to-date information on driving licence.
Skills and Experience Required
- You must be between 25 – 70 years old.
- Hold a full driving licence and be a competent driver. In addition, you must have held a clean driving licence for a minimum of three years.
- A confident, articulate and personable manner, with understanding and empathy.
- A good understanding of confidentiality.
- Reliable, punctual and committed.
- Patience, understanding and sensitivity of the needs of patients and their families.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and to co-operate with the NHS in maintaining good standards of health and safety.
- Agree to undertake, at our expense, a full Disclosure Scotland check.
You Will Not Be Asked To
- Actively help patients boarding and disembarking vehicles.
- Take a passenger in the front seat, next to the driver’s seat.
- Handle cash as this is a cost free service to carers.

Time Requirements
Journeys are pre-booked in advance and volunteer drivers would be expected to undertake at least one journey per month.
Potential volunteers will be risk assessed in accordance with volunteering guidance. All potential volunteers must complete the NHS Recruitment process, which includes appropriate clearance from Disclosure Scotland, and satisfactory health & reference checks.
